Training Consultant Rates

One of the most complex areas to understand, but a very important one, is training consultant rates. The problem is that there are so many levels of consulting that a good comparable rate base is hard to determine.

When an organization is planning to do some major training or to overhaul their training department, it is time to look for a good training consultant firm to guide the process and help evaluate the results. When this idea is presented to upper management, training consultant rates are often the first question asked. This obsession with the bottom line cost is not uncommon when seeking any time of professional service. The question should never be “how much will it cost?” but rather, “how much will it save?”

The training consultant’s rates are going to depend on a number of factors. The base rate will be the time of the actual consultants. If they are going to be visiting your facility during the consulting period, there might be a higher cost to cover their expenses. It is just too difficult to place a set figure on rates until the exact nature of the project is determined and quotes received from the consultants.

It is important to remember to insure that the complete costs are understood. Before the job is awarded is the time to ask the right questions. Beyond the base rates will there be charges for materials? Will there be additional charges for follow up evaluations? These are the types of things that must be understood completely prior to the job. Training Consultant firms have an excellent reputation for being very upfront about rates and charges and it is not hard to get this information for presentation to your own management when preparing a training plan.

Most experts suggest that it is important to understand the potential savings from the training and the use of the consultants. There are times when a training consultant, or indeed, a consultant of any kind is not needed, or their cost does not justify their use. For example, if your organization determines that they are losing around $1000 per month due to a training deficiency, the $500 dollar per day training consultant rate might not seem such a bad cost even if they were to be needed for a week. In two and a half months, they would have paid for themselves and from then on it would be additional profit.

Training consultants are professionals. They also gain a reputation by being successful. In order to capitalize on this success in your organization, you might very well have to pay a bit more than the bargain basement rates for their services. There are so many levels of consulting work today, and each type has its own rate structure. If you are considering a training consultant, make sure you understand the nature of your own problems as well as possible especially where you want to go. Then, you are ready to listen to the training consultants rates.
